Young girl narrowly escapes serious injury on busy road

A YOUNG child narrowly escaped serious injuries after being knocked down on Killininny Road last week on a busy afternoon.
The nine-year-old girl was knocked down by a jeep near Wooddale View estate in Ballycullen along the Killininny road at around 3.20pm on Wednesday, February 17. The child was taken to Tallaght University Hospital where she was treated for non-serious injuries.

Speeding on the road has been an issue of concern for local residents in the nearby estates of Ballycullen and Firhouse. The busy road goes through Firhouse and has many bus routes such as the 65B and 175, with just one roundabout, allowing cars to pick up speed.
Councillor Emma Murphy for Firhouse-Bohernabreena, said that she is aware of the dangers of the road and has raised it numerous times at council meetings.
“There is a lot of speeding on that road and it is something that has been raised on a number of occasions, we are waiting for a traffic management meeting.
“If you go down the Killininny Road on a bike or a car you can pick up speed very easily on that road. The only thing stopping you is the roundabout at Scholars but there is no other traffic calming measures on that road. You see cars pick up speed constantly between the roundabouts and shoot out [the other side] of them.”
One frustrated resident in Ballycullen said: “You always see cars zooming down and it can be so difficult to cross because there are only two pedestrian crossings, so you have to walk a long way just to cross the road. I always see young children running across, especially now because there is two schools and a playground on one side of it, it’s very dangerous.”
One concern is the lack of a pedestrian crossing at the new playground, which sees families and young children constantly crossing the road.
“There has been an increase in the numbers of people going in and out because of the new playground there. The new play space sees a huge amount of people crossing the road where the pedestrian entrance is for the playground and there is no pedestrian crossing.” Cllr Emma Murphy added.
