Young Scientist exhibition takes centre stage online

ZIPPING into action, six local schools are competing alongside more than 1000 students nationwide in this year’s virtual iteration of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.
Nine projects where submitted by local schools across the categories of social and behavioural sciences, technology, and chemical, physical and mathematical sciences.

In the Junior age group, Tallaght Community School’s project will examine the placebo effect of a magic wrist band on sports performance while Amy Carruth from Kingswood Community College will be displaying her product, Fibrostick Pro – a fibromyalgia detection system.
Our Lady’s School in Terenure submitted three projects which include a group of students examining the effectiveness of the safety procedures carried out to help stop the spread of Covid-19.
Three schools in Lucan, Coláiste Phádraig, St Joseph’s College and Kishoge Community College are exhibiting four projects.
Two of Coláiste Phádraig’s projects have made the finals, with one of them measuring the effect of light frequency on background radiation in a cloud chamber.
St Joseph’s project is investigating the link between reading for pleasure and pursuing higher education while Kishoge’s will use technology to try make a more efficient greenhouse.
The annual exhibition is in its 57th year and is taking place online for the first time due to Covid-19 restrictions around gathering.
Running from January 6 – 8, the public can access the event for free once registered at BT Young Scientist.
Bringing together the brightest young minds in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths, students have the opportunity to display their projects to a wider audience this year.
Overall, 2,578 students submitted over 1,300 projects for this year’s contest which where ultimately cut down to a shortlist of 1,055 finalists.
The overall winner is set be announced on Friday afternoon where they will be presented with a cheque for €7,500.
