€60k funding allocated for dog runs at parks
By Aimee Walsh
PLANS for a new dog run have been announced for Rathcoole Park and Collinstown Park at a cost of €60,000 as part of the Public Realm Improvement Works Programme 2021.
The provision of a dog run in Rathcoole Park has been included in the Public Realm Improvement Work Programme, approved at an Area Committee Meeting for Clondalkin on January 20.
Rathcoole Park will get a new dog run
The dog run will allow dogs to walk and play freely off the lead in designated areas in the public park. It will also help to combat the issue of dog fouling in the park.
In response to the announcement, Councillor Eoin Ó Broin for Clondalkin said: “The growing populations of Rathcoole and Saggart need these types of amenities. I am delighted that Rathcoole Park will have a dog run installed in 2021 and congratulate all those who have suggested it to me.”
The campaign for a dog run in Rathcoole Park was started over six years ago, with it being approved in March 2017. The run was then put on hold due to a dig on the park as part of improvement works and then further pushed back because of Covid-19.
Independent Dublin Mid West Councillor Francis Timmons also expressed his delight at the dog runs finally being approved for both the Rathcoole and Collinstown parks.
“All good things come to those that campaign – I have been campaigning since 2016 and 2017 for Dog Parks in Rathcoole Park and Collinstown Park.
“At the council meeting €30,000 was allocated to each to make both a reality.
“I welcome the Public Realm and Water Services Work Programmes 2021 that has allocated €242,000 for 15 projects including the two dog parks. It’s great news for both areas.”
The exact location for the dog park has not been selected yet, with South Dublin County Council currently choosing the best site in the park.
South Dublin County Council said: “We are currently examining the matter to determine the best location within the park for the run, no specific site has been chosen as yet.
“The selection of a suitable site will be done bearing in mind that other activities are already established in many locations around the park such as the playspace and playing pitches.
“The condition of the ground will also be a consideration with regard to drainage requirements.”
