August 2018 Sports Star of the Month – Jenny Egan
THE ECHO 2017 Sports Star, Jenny Egan, is back in this year’s line-up after the Lucan kayaker won bronze in the K1 5000m at the ICF Senior Canoe Sprint World Championships in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal.
In what was arguably the most resilient performance of her sporting career so far, she fought her way back from 15th position to earn Ireland’s first-ever medal at a Senior Canoe Sprint World Championships.
It required a monumental effort for Egan to close the gap on the forerunners which included World Championship medallist, Lizzie Broughton of Great Britain, two-time Olympic bronze medallist, Maryna Litvinchuk of Belarus, multiple World Championship medallist Caitlin Ryan of New Zealand and Rio Olympic silver medallist Emma Jorgensen of Denmark.
This trip to the World Canoe Sprint podium was followed up with a fifth place finish at the Canoe Marathon World Championships at Vila de Prado in Portugal.
And she later teamed up with her fiancé Jon Simmons to win gold in the Mixed K2 class at the 59th International Liffey Descent.
