SILVER SURFERS from St Mark’s Snooker Club, with a combined age of 900, took their initial break-shot for their inaugural Snooker Competition, reports Hayden Moore.

The Silver Surfers Masters 2018 was hosted by D’arcy McGee’s snooker club in the Spawell complex, and saw 12 of their finest players battle it out for the chance to be crowned as the first ever champion of the tournament.

The snooker team in the silver surfers currently has 110 concurrent members, with a further 44 on the waiting-list.

The tournament took place over the course of two days, Tuesday March 13 and Thursday March 15, with Jimmy Dunne coming out victorious after a run of three games, and with Pat O’Reilly picking up the runner-up trophy.

Jimmy had to fend off the advances of John O’Connor and Tommy Sheridan in the earlier rounds before he met Pat O’Reilly in the final.

Member of the club, Brian Merriman, organised the tournament and told The Echo about how the tournament went and his aspirations for the future of the competition.

He said: “It was all a bit of fun, and we’re talking about lads here where the average age is about 70 – and they really are great for their age group.

“We were really taken care of, and I have to thank D’arcy McGees for the hospitality. I really hope this was the first of many years of tournaments there, and hopefully this time next year we’ll be holding the second Silver Surfers Masters tournament.”
