Books of condolences open in Tallaght and Clondalkin in memory of Emma Mhic Mhathúna

TWO books of condolences have today been opened in council offices in Tallaght and Clondalkin in memory of Emma Mhic Mhathúna.

A mother of five, Ms Mhic Mhathúna spoke out about the CervicalCheck crisis, after she was among 221 women with cervical cancer to have received incorrect results.

After receiving a terminal diagnosis of cancer in May of this year, Ms Mhic Mhathúna, who lived in Kerry, passed away on Sunday at the age of 37.

Speaking today, County Mayor Mark Ward said: “As the first citizen of the South Dublin County but more importantly as a father, a son and a brother I want to send my heartfelt condolences to the family and friend of the late Emma Mhic Mhathúna.

“I have opened two books of condolences, one in County Hall Tallaght and one in the Clondalkin Civic Offices.

“They will be available for members of the public to sign for the next week.

“I want to add to the many accolades that Emma has got prior to and after her untimely death.

“Emma was a warrior, a leading campaigner for social justice and a ruthless campaigner for truth.

“What I got from Emma since she went public in relation to the cervical check scandal was her love for her children.

“It was evident in every interview that her children’s future were paramount in her thoughts.

“She was an ordinary mother who touched a nation by her extraordinary bravery and compassion.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.”

Ms Mhic Mhathúna’s funeral mass will take place on Wednesday.
